Mérida, Yucatán — A new commercial complex, possibly stores and a hotel, will be built at the entrance to the international airport, a chamber of commerce official said.

The president of Canacome, Juan José Abraham Dáguer, stressed that the construction of new commercial complex will generate immediate benefits for local people, from new jobs to shopping options.

But he could not pin down exactly what shops or services the complex will offer.

“We understand that the project that will be built at the airport will influence the commercial area, but we still do not know for sure what facilities will be in the building,” he said, in Spanish.

If a hotel is part of the complex, airport staff could benefit when they need to sleep through a layover, Abraham Dáguer suggested.

“…but so far there is nothing concrete,” he said.

Airport workers reported being told that a Walmart would be part of the mix.

A complex in the city’s north recently opened with both a hotel and Walmart, as well as other stores and restaurants. Even as the hotel there was being built, it remained a mystery for months which hotel brand would operate there.
