Property damage is the most common crime committed in Yucatán

Property damage, threats, and theft were the most frequently reported crimes in Yucatán, according to federal security agencies.

Drug dealing and domestic violence also increased compared to the previous year.

The latest report covers data through November.

Property damage led the statistics with 639 reports, peaking in February, April, May, and July with over 50 monthly complaints on average.

Threats ranked second with 589 reports, averaging 53 monthly complaints.

Theft placed third with 462 cases, including both violent and non-violent incidents. These included:

  • 70 home burglaries, with one violent case
  • 104 vehicle thefts (63 motorcycles and 41 cars), all non-violent
  • 38 pedestrian robberies (20 violent, 18 non-violent)
  • One robbery in public transport
  • 94 business robberies through November, exceeding 2023’s total of 93
  • One machinery theft and one case of stolen construction materials
  • 154 miscellaneous thefts

Drug dealing ranked fifth with 432 cases, marking the highest five-year total. Cases increased steadily from 165 in 2020 to 432 in 2024.

Domestic violence reports reached 284, representing a 47% increase from 2023’s 193 cases.

There were 218 assault cases, including 183 intentional (9 with firearms, 53 with knives, 121 with other weapons) and 35 accidental cases from traffic incidents.

Homicides increased to 178 cases, compared to 165 in 2023. This included 137 traffic-related deaths and 41 intentional homicides (5 by firearms, 20 by knives, 16 by other means).

The remaining top crimes included:

  • 110 cases of family support obligation violations
  • 104 sexual abuse cases
  • 75 fraud cases

Additional notable crimes included seven femicides, two child corruption cases, 38 property dispossession cases, 52 public servant crimes, 43 rape cases, 11 electoral crimes, and 334 other common crimes.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
