The 2020 Merida Marathon kicked off this morning with fireworks, sirens and a record number of participants.

The 6 a.m. starting shot rang out at the Monument to the Homeland. The predawn hoopla could be heard for miles around, along with singing and the voice of an excited emcee.

The annual marathon attracted 4,002 athletes from 20 countries. That is nearly 400 more runners than in 2019. Of those, 2,321 are male and 1,681 are female.

Among the registered runners is Kenyan athlete Julius Kibet Koskei, who stands out for winning two of the most important marathons in the country, in Monterrey and Torreón.

The runners represent also countries that include Afghanistan, China, Germany, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, the United States, France, Guatemala, Australia, Honduras, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

The registration figures were also exceeded in the half marathon, when 1,293 athletes signed up. In the 10-kilometer event, 1,484 people registered, and for the three-kilometer walk, those enrolled reached 462.
