Cenotes and wetlands will be restored to the tune of about $260 million pesos this year, the Ministry of Urban Development and Environment told the news agency Notimex.

Agency chief Eduardo Batllori Sampedro said $18 million pesos will be allocated to the construction of storage facilities and regional solid waste transfer station where runoff from farms and roads contaminates ground water in 19 towns such as Maxcanú, Kanasín, Uman and Hunucmá.

Another $2 million pesos will attempt to correct contamination in various cenotes and wetlands, he said.
