RFC update: Deadline to get tax ID in Mexico extended 6 months

Mexico’s tax officials have extended their previous July 1 deadline for acquiring an RFC.

SAT is now giving residents in Mexico until Jan. 1, 2023 to receive the tax ID number.

“At this time we do not know how that will affect sellers and buyers of casas … your notarios or accountants will know. Please check,” advised Vikki Hillman of Merida Expat Services.

The RFC is mainly for businesses and workers who pay taxes, but now even retirees with no taxable income will need it to sell a house, buy a car or get internet service.

SAT offices were widely reported to be unable to honor most requests for appointments for residents requiring the certification.
