Mérida, Yucatán — Traffic is flowing again after a locomotive and two freight cars derailed at Avenida Miguel Alemán and Pérez Ponce this morning.

Poor track and surface conditions were blamed.

State police arrived around 6 a.m. to redirect traffic around the stranded train at Col. Alemán, near Col. Jesús Carranza.

The intersection is where Calle 50 begins, and provides rotary access to Itzimná.

A train was reportedly on its way from Umán to tow the eight freight cars that are stuck on broken track.

The train, belonging to the Ferrocarril del Istmo De Tehuantepec, was loaded with cement and rumbles slowly every day through the city at ground level.
