Mérida, Yucatán — Entering Santiago Market? Bring your sunglasses and prepare for the glare of bright, shiny objects.

The 100-year-old mercado is practically new again: Workers replaced the facade, lighting, tile floors, tables and countertops, some of which are now stainless steel.

The effect is cheerful, or antiseptic, depending on how you look at it.

The project was designed to make customers more comfortable and to provide a more hygienic environment. Fifty-two fans circulate the air, bathrooms have been remodeled, and a new biodigester has a capacity of 1,300 liters of waste.

This is the first overhaul here in more than 30 years, and continues similar improvements at Cholul, Caucel and Chuburná, with a budget of just over 14 million pesos, according to the Ayuntamiento.

The roofs were also waterproofed; four fire extinguishers, a first-aid kit and emergency signage was included. New trees were also planted.

Mayor Maria Fritz Sierra said that this project is a boost to a beloved traditional market, visited by both locals and foreigners every day.

The market anchors Santiago Park, four blocks from the Plaza Grande, at Calle 59 between 70 and 72. Vendors sell meats, flowers, fruits. vegetables and tortillas while along the perimeter small restaurants serve traditional foods during the day.
