Progreso, Yucatán — Two huge cruise ships docked here Tuesday, bringing 5,720 passengers and 2,000 crew, shortly after an unsightly tide of seaweed littered the beaches.

But it was a good day for tourists and merchants alike, reports Diario de Yucatán.

The Norwegian Dawn came first from New Orleans, at 5:30 in the morning. Two hours later, the Carnival Triumph, a steady visitor to the Yucatecan port, arrived with more people who had just explored Cozumel.

Some visitors occupied beach chairs, bathed in the sea and rented jet skis and banana boats, while others took excursions to Telchac, Mérida or Xcambó.

Cruise ship season continues today with the arrival of the Carnival Freedom from Galveston, and Thursday with the Carnival Fantasy from Cozumel.
