For Labor Day, banks, English library closed, but shops and zoos are open
Mérida, Yucatán — It’s business as usual for Dia Internacional del Trabajador, or Labor Day, on Tuesday at the zoos and some essential city agencies.
But Servilimpia, the garbage collection company that serves much of the Centro, will be giving its workers the day off. Sana, Pamplona and Corbase collections will proceed as usual.
Every May 1 is a federal public holiday, so banks, schools, government offices and many businesses are closed. The Mérida English Library will also be closed, and on Wednesday, its summer hours begin when they open at 10 a.m.
Grocery stores and shops are typically open on Labor Day.
The Centenario and Animaya zoos will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The city’s Ayuntatel hotline to request municipal services — 999-924-4000 — will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Public lighting crews will work their normal schedule, and streets and parks will be maintained by crews operating in two shifts, from 6 am. to 6 p.m.
The Municipal Animal Control Center will have guards from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The holiday was first officially commemorated in Mexico on May 1, 1923, and a Labor Day parade was held in Mexico as early as 1913.
