Mérida, Yucatán — Mérida Fest 2015 kicked off last night with the traditional Alborada, when singing troubadours took to the streets to signify the beginning of the citywide celebration.
In the Plaza Grande tonight, an inaugural concert by Armando Manzanero and Francisco Céspedes is among the first of 165 artistic, academic and entertainment events, all free to the public. Manzanero is considered the postwar era’s premier Mexican romantic composer, while Céspedes is a Cuban-born singer known for his 1998 song Vida Loca.
The celebration of Mérida’s 473rd anniversary lasts three weeks.
