Slow Food Yucatan returns June 20 with stricter pandemic-era precautions
The Slow Food Yucatan market returns to Merida on Saturday, June 20, as everyone adapts to the “new normal.”
The market, which on May 2 was abruptly shut down by health officials, will have half as many market stalls, said organizers.
The weekly open-air market will start with 32 exhibitors each spaced more than 1.5 meters apart. It will operate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., closing an hour sooner than before.
Parking will be available at the adjacent Cine Colón.
Local exhibitors will sell organic vegetables, fruits, breads, beef, pork and lamb, as well as cheeses, milk and honey.
Home delivery, an option that has become increasingly popular during coronavirus contingencies, will continue.
Market participants are certified by the Yucatan Health Ministry. They must wear aprons with the name of the market, cover their hair and wear face masks.
The Slow Food movement, which started in Italy, came to Merida about 10 years to serve customers concerned about sustainability and factory-produced products. It has also served to be a social place for expats, although today customers are asked not to mingle and risk the spread of contagion.
