Mérida, Yucatán — Solar panels and green roofs have earned 235 homeowners property tax relief between 23 and 35 percent this year. And more are invited to apply for discounts until the end of 2017.
The city is encouraging residents to install eco-friendly systems that allow them to reduce electricity consumption.
The Deputy Director of Revenue of the City Council, Santiago Massa Ramos, explained that this discount is fixed and applies until Dec. 28, when the municipality closes the fiscal year.
The city has issued tax subsidies adding up to over 185,000 pesos.
Massa Ramons said that several homeowners who paid in January, before this program was launched, received a refund on request.
As technology has improved, solar panel systems have gone down in price dramatically over the past several years.
