A beverage accidentally spilled over electronic equipment in the flight deck forced a Cancun-bound jet in Europe into an emergency U-turn.

Five people were treated in the hospital for smoke inhalation following Wednesday night’s incident, which forced Condor flight DE2116 to make an emergency landing in Ireland.

It had been traveling from Frankfurt, Germany, to Cancun with 337 passengers and crew on board.

A spokeswoman for the airline said the diversion had been a “precautionary measure.”

Passengers were then shuttled on the same plane to Manchester, England, where cabin crew were changed due to legal operating hours, the spokeswoman said while offering an apology to the customers.

The aircraft had been about 1,500 kilometers west of Ireland when the crew issued a mayday call and turned around.

Frankfurt-based Condor is Germany’s second-largest commercial airline based on fleet size and passengers. It specializes in leisure destinations in the Mediterranean, Asia, Africa, North America, South America and the Caribbean.
