The 16,000-square-meter Palace of the Mayan Civilization, which began construction in 2009 but has been overtaken with weeds for three years, has not been abandoned, according to the state tourism secretary.

The project will go forward after further analysis, said Tourism Secretary Saúl Ancona. The site, which is in the peninsula’s most famous archaeological zone, will have an even broader vision and be called the Chichen Itzá Sustainable Tourism Center, he said.

Former Yucatán Gov. Ivonne Ortega blames former president Felipe Calderón for providing just 90 million pesos, rather than the 400 million that had been agreed. Attention went instead to the Mundo Maya museum in Mérida, she said.
