Street Vendor Detained After Punching Mérida Official

A marquesitas vendor was arrested Tuesday after he struck a Mérida city official during a routine permit inspection in Parque Hidalgo, just hours before the city’s Grito de Independencia ceremony.

The confrontation happened at the corner of Calles 60 and 59 in the Centro, where inspectors from the city’s Secretaría Técnica del Servicio Público de Mercados, along with Municipal Civil Protection staff, were checking vendor permits ahead of the Sept. 15 holiday. City crews routinely sweep the historic center before major public events to clear stands that lack authorization or basic safety equipment, since large crowds are expected to pass through.

Inspectors found the vendor, identified only as Adolfo N., operating without a permit and without the safety measures required for a public street stand. Officials asked him to pack up. He refused, according to the outlet Por Esto!, so inspectors moved to confiscate his equipment under the city’s market regulations.

That’s when the vendor struck one of the municipal workers on the scene, authorities said. Mérida police officers responded and detained him.

He was later handed over to the Fiscalía General del Estado, Yucatán’s state attorney general’s office, where prosecutors will determine what charges, if any, he’ll face over the assault on a public employee.

The marquesita cart has become one of the Centro’s most familiar fixtures, especially around dusk, when carts selling the rolled, cheese-and-caramel treat line up near the plazas. That popularity has also made informal vending a persistent flashpoint between the city and merchants who set up without going through the permit process, which can be costly and slow.

City Hall said Tuesday’s incident won’t change its approach. Officials said supervision of street vendors will continue, and that anyone operating in public space needs both a permit and the required safety setup. Mérida has ramped up enforcement against unauthorized stands over the past year, part of a broader citywide push to clear sidewalks and restore order in the historic center.

Municipal authorities also stressed that public safety comes first and that violence against city workers doing their jobs won’t be tolerated, whatever the circumstances behind an inspection.

For now, the episode is a reminder that Mérida’s ongoing cleanup of informal street commerce, however routine it’s become, doesn’t always go smoothly. With the Centro packed for the holiday weekend, the city has said little about whether the incident will change how future operations are staffed or timed.
