Progreso, Yucatán — Friday and Saturday seemed to be perfect beach days, and the run of good weather and healthy sales is expected to continue today.

Friday began with a visit from the Vision of the Seas cruise ship, and about 500 tourists roamed the malecón to enjoy sunny skies and a calm surf.

Carnival Fantasy pulled in to port on Saturday, a couple hours late, but still in time to contribute to an already big day for the tourist sector. An estimated 8,000 local, national and international visitors visited Saturday.

Merchants reported healthy sales; tourists bought large bottles of water to rehydrate themselves in the heat.

A large group of motorcyclists, likely here for the rally that began Thursday, added energy to the beach.

Two motorcyclists from Cancun told Diario de Yucatán that they had a fantastic day on the beach. They also indicated that the seafood dishes were the “cereza del pastel,” or “cherry on the cake.”

“It has been a real pleasure to come to the malecón of Progreso. We were amazed with the fish, the meals are delicious,” said one of the bikers.

Contrasting with the recent Carnaval chaos on the beach, the weekend began with good spirits and a family atmosphere, Diario reported. Punto Medio reported that merchants said the weekend will help them recover from losses during Carnaval.

Today is expected to be sunny and 35C/95F.
