Mérida, Yucatán — Along the coast, Sunday alcohol sales have been extended by two hours for the month of August.

Ministry of Health officials reported they liberalized Sunday hours with vacationers in mind.

The new hours apply to shops in Celestún, Sisal, Chuburná, Chelem, Progreso, Chicxulub, Telchac, Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas, where for the time being, doors can remain open until 7 p.m. In September, they revert to closing at 5.

The announcement was published in the Official Gazette, which states all wine, spirits or beer must be in a closed container and consumed elsewhere.

The longer hours do not apply to San Felipe and Dzilam de Bravo, where violence flared when fishermen from other states were confronted by locals.

The last time Sunday alcohol sales were extended was for Easter, after merchants asked for more time to accommodate customers.
