Taqueria shutdown is a reminder to other businesses about tax compliance

Mérida, Yucatán — If you’re running a business in Yucatán, you can’t refuse to issue electronic facturas to your customers who qualify for them.

That’s a reminder from the Mérida branch of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Mérida (Canacome) after a restaurant was shut down over electronic facturas.

Electronic facturas are more than standard receipts. They allow customers with a tax ID number known as a Clave en el Registro Federal de Contribuyentes, or an RFC, to declare expenses.

The Cacique taqueria in Campestre was popular, but that wasn’t enough to keep it open when representatives of the Tax Administration System showed up with “clausurado” stickers and yellow tape.

Cacique is between Calles 3 and 1H on the Prolongación Paseo Montejo.

Aside from being shut down, businesses can be fined by the Tax Administration Service (SAT), said the Chamber. Closures could last up to 15 days, cutting off revenue to pay for fines that can exceed 70,000 pesos.

“As a chamber and as businessmen, we urge all formal traders to comply with the fiscal requirements as they should be, even though the authorities ask us for something very cumbersome,” said Michel Salum Francis, Canacome chairman.

He admitted that recently updated technology can be daunting, but it’s important to overcome any reluctance to comply.

“Many are adapting although it is very complicated, but in the end we must adapt to the new system to avoid setbacks and possible sanctions,” Salum Francis said.

Business should consult an accountant about setting up a system to issue electronic facturas.
