Mérida, Yucatán — Viewing hotels, restaurants and haciendas, 23 wedding wholesalers from Canada, Mexico and the United States are nearly through a cook’s tour of the city’s wedding market.

The first edition of the Feztiva Wedding Fam is a four-day junket for people who sell high-end weddings. Organizers see potential for more wedding here that start at $50,000 USD/900,000 peso and can reach $70,000 USD/1.26 million pesos.

The region’s romantic setting, and scores of experienced service providers, have made the inland Peninsula a fashionable destination, just as the Mayan Riviera beaches have been for years.

The big, established rival is to the east. Cancun and other spots in Quintana Roo has the advantage of more international airport connections and more luxury hotel rooms, adding up to 400 million pesos per year from destination weddings.

But organizers say the beach wedding is dull and old hat, and not nearly as adventurous and romantic as a Maya-infused ceremony in one of Yucatan’s romantic landmarks.
