Cirque Du Soleil’s presentation of the contemporary circus show “Corteo” in Mérida is expected to attract more than 60,000 visitors,  with 12,000 people from neighboring states alone. The hospitality industry has an opportunity to benefit from overnight visitors.

Other than Mérida, “Corteo” is seen only in Mexico City and Guadalajara. Cirque’s show in the Riviera Maya is a different production. So the show is seen as a rare chance for people in the greater region to catch a hugely popular show that has been touring the world.

The bigtop is up at the Coliseo Yucatán from June 25 to July 12. The show, mounted in the arena parking lot, has an audience capacity of 2,700.

Cortéo is Italian for cortège,” or funeral procession, and the show is about a clown who watches his own funeral taking place in a carnival-like atmosphere. Since its premiere in Montreal, Canada, in 2005, “Corteo” has been seen by more than 5 million spectators.

Prices range from 799 pesos to 3,490 pesos for the diamond section. Tickets are available at the Coliseo box office, Farmacias del Ahorro (Montejo North Branch), Chapur (Centre and North), Very Sexy (Gran Plaza, Galleries and Altabrisa) and The Skipper’s Travel Agency (City Center and Altabrisa).
