New levels of violence and warnings from the U.S. State Department didn’t keep tourists from playing at Playa del Carmen.

Quintana Roo’s General Directorate of Tourism reported an 18.19 percent uptick in foreign tourists during Holy Week. Hotel occupancy was 91.46 percent.

Moreover, Playa del Carmen ranks second on the list of Mexico’s 10 most sought-after tourist vacation destinations, Excelsior reported.

A study conducted by Trivago, the platform that compares hotel prices, concludes that 44 percent of international visitors are in Mexico for a vacation, 39 percent are on business and 17 percent are weekenders.

Of domestic travelers, 49 percent travel for business, 45 percent for the weekend and eight percent are on a vacation.

The study also found that 42 percent of those seeking hotels in Mexico are from the United States, while Argentines occupy second place at 17 percent, followed by Canadians with 9 percent and Brazil with 8 percent. The European market, which includes English, German and Spanish tourists, is increasing, reported Trivago.
