The rapid train project linking Quintana Roo and Yucatán has been permanently canceled, the national finance minister announced today.

Public spending cutbacks have also killed the Mexico City-Queretero rail project, but the new Mexico City airport has been spared the ax.

The official of the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) said federal highways or rural road maintenance or construction budgets will be affected.

Observers had earlier gleaned clues as to the Yucatán project’s demise, but reports on those doubts were followed by promises that the rails line would indeed be a reality.

The design for the construction of transpeninsular rapid-transit linewas to be released this month, with construction ending in 2018.
