The Plaza de la Trova cultural center will replace the current legislative chamber in the heart of the Historic Center.

Overwhelmed by the challenges renovating the state government building, officials instead will tear it down and build something new alongside the grand Teatro Jose Peón Contreras and the Church of the Third Order, which dates to the 17th century.

Visually, the legislative building has been an odd duck among historic gems. This time, the facade will be designed in harmony with its neighbors, officials vow. A budget of 60 million pesos has been set aside for construction.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, is finalizing the details of a study to determine how best to avoid damaging the its historic surroundings.

Construction is slated for later this year. A modern, new legislature building is under construction on the western edge of the city.

The tourist-friendly cultural center will be devoted to the region’s musical heritage. The music school that operates in La Mejorada will be part of the new complex.
