U.S. Retiree, 73, Found Dead in Mérida Home

Police in Mérida are investigating after a 73-year-old American man was found dead inside a home in the Chuburná Hidalgo neighborhood this week.

Neighbors alerted authorities after noticing signs something was wrong at the property, located on Calle 19 by 24. Because of how the home was secured, officers had to climb a ladder to the second floor and enter through a balcony door to reach the interior.

Once inside, officers found the man’s body on the ground floor, near the main entrance. Authorities said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating the man had likely died some time before he was discovered. His name has not been released, and Por Esto! did not report additional identifying details; Yucatán Magazine could not independently confirm his identity by publication time.

An initial review of the scene turned up no obvious signs of violence, according to authorities, though the investigation remains open and a cause of death has not been determined.

The case echoes past incidents involving American retirees living alone in Mérida. Yucatán Magazine previously reported on another American resident, a Vietnam veteran in his 70s who was found dead in his Centro home in 2018, in that case attributed to natural causes. Cases like these have periodically raised questions within the expat community about wellness checks for older residents living independently, particularly those without family nearby.

Mérida has become one of the most popular destinations in Mexico for American retirees and remote workers, part of a broader wave of Americans in Mexico that has accelerated in recent years, driven by lower living costs and access to health care.
