Uber in Mérida Adds Alert Zones and Rider Seniority TagsNew safety tools show user trip history and flag potentially risky locations
Two new features were announced for drivers working for Uber in Mérida: “Alert Zones” and user seniority tags that appear on driver screens before they accept trip requests.
The Alert Zones feature displays a warning icon next to pickup or destination locations flagged through public information, driver reports, and historical trip data. These locations appear highlighted in brown with a warning symbol on the driver’s app.
The second feature shows passenger ratings alongside their total completed trips on the Uber platform. The trip count appears in parentheses next to the user’s star rating.
“Thanks to consistent listening efforts, we know that drivers in Mérida value having more information and clarity about their trips,” said Cecilia Román, Security Communications Manager for Uber Mexico.
Both features aim to give drivers more control without affecting their acceptance rates. Drivers can let ride requests expire if they choose not to accept trips to flagged areas or from newer users without facing platform penalties.
Testing and Implementation
Uber tested the features with driver feedback several months before the full launch. The company designed the updates to improve the driver experience while ensuring passenger service remains unaffected.
The Alert Zones system uses a model that analyzes multiple data sources. This includes publicly available information, reports from other drivers, and records from previous trips made through the app. The system flags locations that may present safety concerns for drivers.
Román said the updates particularly help new drivers unfamiliar with the city and those seeking better information about ride requests.
Broader Safety Infrastructure
The new features join Uber’s existing safety measures in Mérida. All users must complete verification processes, including ID scanning and photo verification. The platform uses artificial intelligence to request additional verification for potentially higher-risk trip requests and to detect duplicate user accounts.
Uber screens all drivers through background checks for criminal history and driving offenses before they can start working. The company also maintains policies against inappropriate usernames and allows drivers to report violations through the app.
During trips, drivers have access to PIN verification, route sharing with trusted contacts, encrypted video recording, insurance coverage, and 24/7 support. According to Uber’s latest safety report, 99.9 percent of rides end without incident.
The Beginnings of Uber in Mérida
Uber has operated in Mérida since 2016, though not without challenges from traditional taxi unions. The relationship between Uber and local taxi drivers has evolved, with the company recently allowing taxi drivers to join its platform.
Uber operates in more than 95 cities throughout Mexico, serving millions of users. In Mérida, the service has become popular with locals and tourists navigating the colonial city center and surrounding neighborhoods.
The new safety features address driver concerns while maintaining Uber’s position in Mexico’s competitive ride-sharing market. Uber claims approximately 76% of the rideshare market in Mexico, ahead of competitors like Didi and other regional platforms.
Tourist Destination Impact
Mérida’s status as a growing tourist destination makes transportation safety particularly important. The city serves as a gateway to Mayan archaeological sites, colonial architecture tours, and beach excursions along the Yucatán coast.
Recent research shows Mexico’s ride-sharing services are generally considered safer than traditional taxis, with GPS tracking and driver accountability providing additional security layers.
Ride-sharing apps offer familiar interfaces and transparent pricing for visitors from the United States and other countries. The new Mérida features continue this trend toward increased transparency and driver empowerment on the platform.
Uber said the Alert Zones and user experience features will remain active as long as they prove effective for driver safety and platform efficiency.
