The taxi strike ends today at 1, and Uber is responding by offering free rides well into the evening.

Customers can take up to two trips normally valued at 50 pesos each. On the app, they must use the discount code ElijoUberMerida. The same offer applies in Cancun, Villahermosa and Campeche, with a corresponding code.

The offer is good until 8 this evening.

Uber and the taxi union has been at odds, with tensions boiling over into some isolated instances of physical violence.

Before the Government Palace, a peaceful pro-Uber demonstration against the violence was followed by another demonstration, this time from the FUTV taxi union challenging the ride-sharing platform’s ability to compete with licensed cabbies.

On social media today, residents marveled at how clear the streets were while taxis and combis formed a caravan that looped around the city center.

FUTV also today provided nine vans deployed as free shuttles for travelers arriving at the airport today, and some vehicles were set aside for hospital emergencies.
