Unprecedented exhibit brings together 5 legendary Yucatecan artists

Emilio Vera Granados, Manuel Lizama Salazar, Ermilo Torre Gamboa, Alonso Gutiérrez y Fernando Palma, the “big five” Yucatecan painters, are in a single exhibit.

Mérida, Yucatán — Five of Yucatán’s greatest living artists, maestros Emilio Vera Granados, Manuel Lizama Salazar, Ermilo Torre Gamboa, Alonso Gutiérrez and Fernando Palma, are exhibiting jointly in the gallery of the José Martí University of Latin America.

The exhibition calls them “The Big Five” of Yucatecan artists, range in age between 75 and 94.

It is the first time that these renown, late-career artists will exhibit together.

The exhibit is on view until March 16.

The details of the exhibition, coordinated by Manuel May Tilán, were announced at a press conference led by Dr. Carlos Bojórquez Urzaiz, president of the university’s advisory council.

The gallery is on the university campus at Avenida Líbano between 1-C and 1-D at Col. México Norte.

The reception begins 8 p.m. Friday at the Reynaldo Bolio Paccelli gallery, with live music by violinist José Luis Chan Sabido. It is free and open to the public.
