Despite the objections of many neighbors, the Urban Center Mérida shopping plaza in Fracc. Monterreal is taking shape quickly.

More than a year ago, neighbors living behind the site tried to stop the project to preserve the residential feel of the area. Noise and vibrations have disrupted the residents as well, according to MetrópoliYucatán.

Urban Center is expected to be finished at the end of the year, at Cámara de Comercio and Calle 22, facing Boxito Kalia.

Mega’s affiliated “hypermarket” Comercial Mexicana, OfficeMax, Starbucks, Smart Fit, Chili’s, Burger King, Bostons, Levi’s and Lacoste will be among the occupants. About 39 shops, a restaurant area with terraces and a playground are also promised.

In about a one-kilometer radius, Uptown Mérida and Odara Plaza are being built, joining Plaza Altabrisa, notes MetrópoliYucatán. Orara hasn’t announced tenants, but Uptown has signed up a Hilton Garden Inn, a the city’s sixth Walmart, a Cinemex and another Starbucks.
