Utility companies coordinate with Centro maintenance program

The water company, the electric company, and the phone and cable company are joining the city’s “permanent maintenance program” in the Centro Histórico.

CFE, Japay and Telmex have agreed to join in the efforts to maintain and improve the first nine blocks around the main square.

That means that the program can do more than scrape gum and power-wash the sidewalks. The program is now in a position to relocate or repair poles, lines and grates that mar the Centro.

The program focuses on streets between calles 59, 65, 58 and 64,  said César Bojórquez Zapata, a city official.

Last October, Mayor Mauricio Vila Dosal launched the Permanent Maintenance Program of the Historic Center, which in a first stage maintained sidewalks, garages and streets, with a budget of 500,000 pesos.

In addition, repaving projects were included with an additional investment of 1.9 million pesos.

The program includes Japay, CFE and Telmex, which houses a large portion of their urban infrastructure in the Centro Histórico.

Also collaborating are the Patronato del Centro Histórico, INAH, the local Chamber of Commerce, the State Transport Directorate and the Strategic Plan of Mérida.

The program also includes constant attention to sidewalks and parks, hosing down the Plaza Grande and other spaces twice a week.

The utilities were given 24 hours to start repairing problems with drinking water, wiring and public phones, cables and registers. The Strategic Plan has promotional campaigns in support of caring for the Historical Center, to the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the garbage collection schedules are respected and that the merchants use garbage containers.
