Merida’s first vegan convenience store, Solara, opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday at Casa del Sol.

The space aims to promote healthy lifestyles through veganism. Workshops and yoga classes are also offered.

Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes not only meat but also animal-derived ingredients including eggs, honey and dairy products.

The founder of the minisuper, Eugenia Casarín, said she wanted to provide Merida’s vegan population with economical alternatives. Casarín is a doctor in psychology who is devoted to promoting healthy lifestyles.

Solara has around 150 organic and natural products with prices starting at 15 pesos.

Alternative flours, vegan meat substitutes and gluten-free foods are also for sale.

The store’s administrator, Itauqui Martínez, said they seek to bring the vegetarian and vegan concept to various areas of the state, which is why it is located in the west of the city.

Casa del Sol is on the corner of Calle 39A, and Calle 42, Col. Miguel Hidalgo Zona Dorada, in a residential area one block from Plaza Las Americas.

Solara is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day but Sunday. Call 999-471-4733.
