Paseo de Montejo

Tue., April 16 @ 5:34 pm

Paseo de Montejo

Mérida’s broad and elegant tree-lined Paseo de Montejo is the city’s main boulevard inspired by Paris’s Champs-Élysées.

Once a primarily residential area, the Paseo de Montejo has since been commercialized and many of the historic 19th century mansions that line the boulevard have been converted into restaurants, nightclubs, boutique hotels, shops, office buildings and museums.

Two of the most recognizable spots along the paseo are the Monumento a la Bandera and the Museo Regional de Antropologia (Regional Anthropology Museum) which is housed in the pink Palacio Canton, one of the grandest mansions along the boulevard.

Fun-loving Hennessy’s Irish Pub, swanky Rosas & Xocolate boutique hotel and spa, and Bollicine Apertivo, a small restaurant set up by an expat from Italy, represent today’s Mérida.

On Sundays the Paseo de Montejo in Merida is closed to traffic to accommodate the city’s cyclists.
