A block north of the main square, the renovated Teatro Armando Manzanero is state-of-the-art performance space with three auditoriums, the largest with a capacity of 1,200 spectators. The smaller spaces are used for film series or lectures.
The iconic theater opened in 1949 as movie palace, the Cine Mérida. The cinama closed in 1992, but re-opened in 2000 after the state government bought and renovated it, re-naming it the Teatro Mérida. Later, it was renamed in honor of the famed Yucatecan trova singer.
More upgrades came in 2017-18.
