Raise a glass to the Merida English Library for surviving lockdown. Its gradual reopening is afoot and Thursday’s MEL Wine Tasting is evidence of just that.
Hosted at the library, Calle 53 near 68, the event features four Mexican wines paired with Mexican street-food-inspired tapas. Cost is 500 pesos for members, 600 for non-members.
The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 18. Proof of vaccination required.
The wines will be presented by Fernando Almazan of Sommelier Express coupled with tasty treats from Patricia, aka Paty, from the atypical taco stand, Atipico.

The wine tasting is part of the Merida English Library’s Welcome Home to MEL initiative. Subsequent MEL wine tastings will return to fabulous private home venues in Mérida on the third Thursday of each month.
While shopping malls in the United States and Europe face declining foot traffic and store closures, Mexico continues to see a wave of new mall construction. Retail sales in the country rose 4.4% year-on-year in November 2025, and 15 new malls were planned for 2025 alone. Few places illustrate this trend better than Mérida, Yucatán,…
From the very beginning, the Mayan Train was ambitious. Perhaps too ambitious, in fact. The $30 billion rail project—more than three times over budget—has faced a long list of fair criticisms: environmental damage, potential structural risks, cost overruns, and allegations of corruption. But without discounting these many problems, the Tren Maya is at last…
There’s no better way to understand Valladolid than from the saddle of a bicycle. The streets fan out in an orderly colonial grid, the terrain is flat, and within a few kilometers of the main square, you’ll find cenotes, haciendas, a 16th-century convent, and Maya villages where life moves at a pace the tour buses…
There is a neighborhood in the south of Mérida where the smell of fried pork has drawn people for more than 70 years. Xcalachén — now officially one of the city’s three Barrios Mágicos — built its identity around a single dish: chicharra, a Yucatecan specialty that bears only a passing resemblance to the chicharrón…
No matches will be played in Cancún during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That distinction belongs to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. But starting May 11, Cancún will be subject to some of the strictest airspace controls in the country — and anyone flying into, out of, or around the region this summer needs to…
In the heart of Monterrey’s Parque Fundidora, a massive terracotta building houses the country’s most important tribute to baseball. The Salón de la Fama del Beisbol Mexicano (Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame) opened in 2019, offering a modern alternative to the static, velvet-rope museums that typically define sports history. Here, the exhibits are not just…
