Women’s polo tourney benefits orphans at Christmas
The Copa de Chicas for Charity event made for a busy weekend at the Yucatán Polo Club.
Over 400 spectators came out to Komchen to watch two all-women teams battle it out.
The rival teams each represented rival hair salons: The Kate Miasik team beat Robert Abuda team in the finals 7 to 5.
But the real winners were the children of the Caimede DIF orphanage. Proceeds totaling 32,000 pesos — raised at the silent auction — go toward 280 Christmas gifts for its little residents.
Copa de Chicas was created and promoted by Kimmy Suki, a longtime resident, business owner and polo player.
The players arrived from various countries. On the Abuda team: Veronica Boehm, Alejandra Silviera Puig, Scarlett Gomez, Yanin Manzanilla and Fabienne O´Neill. On the Miasik team: Kimberly Davin, Laura Wilson, Yvonne Leszinski and Ivana Manzanilla.
The silent auction included a donation by Ardens Jewelery, art donated by Antonella Pozzo Ardizzi, a marketing package by Yucatán Expat Life and a three-night stay at Ochenta y Dos.
On Saturday, guests were entertained by a horseback fashion show that featured Martin Lopez of Tócate IAP, the local breast cancer foundation.
