Mérida, Yucatán — Could it be Yucatán’s turn to host Mexico’s giant Tianguis Turístico in 2020?

A state government official, who confirmed the formal request to host it in Mérida, is confident that before September it will hear a “yes” from federal officials.

“We have the necessary lobbying for the 2020 Tourism Fair to be in Mérida … we continue to make the necessary arrangements to make it so and we believe it will be favorable for the state,” the secretary of tourist development, Saúl Ancona Salazar told Milenio Novedades.

The president of the Concanaco, José Manuel López Campos, reported that the bid was formally filed during this year’s tourist fair.

The tourist fair, a huge economic engine for whichever city hosts it, is held in various cities around the country.

The convention was an Acapulco mainstay since its inception in 1975, until 2012 when organizers decided to vary the locations. This would be Yucatán’s first time hosting the international event. Past events were also in Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. Next year’s will be back in Acapulco.

Milenio Novedades announced last April that the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce (Concanaco) proposed Mérida as a candidate to host the fair in two years.

The event would be a time to show off Mérida’s new, modern international convention center to an estimated 10,000 travel agents, operators and officials from 89 countries.

Saúl Ancona said that two letters were sent to the event’s organizing committee, one from the Business Coordinating Council and the other signed by Gov. Rolando Zapata Bello.
