Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatan has shown sustained growth for more than a year and a half due to the outstanding performance of the manufacturing sector and construction.

That, among other factors, places the state in the No. 1 position for growth in the first quarter of 2017.

Yucatán has achieve a growth rate of 12.5 percent, according to National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

In addition, in 2016 the state’s industry grew by 9.2 percent, the highest in 13 years, since INEGI began to record economic activity.

The arrival of new companies, as well as the start of operations of the Yucateca Brewery and the Envases Universales container plant, will contribute to local industry’s medium and long-term sustainability.

In the manufacturing sector, Yucatán has already achieved double-digit growth for the last 20 consecutive months and grew 4.2 percent during the first quarter of this year.

Between Oct. 1, 2012 and March 31, 2017, manufacturing grew by a historic 42.3 percent. That compares favorably with the previous 10 years, in which the state’s manufacturing industries grew by only 2.6 percent, which translates to 0.2 percent per year.

Historically, the Yucatecan manufacturing industry had never grown more than 5.7 percent until it sustained double-digit progress for the past two years.
