For the fourth time since the coronavirus crisis arrived, 11 patients in Yucatan died in a span of 24 hours. That is the highest number of fatalities the state has seen in just a day.

Only on May 21, 28 and 29 was the death count so high in Yucatan. Accumulated deaths since April 3, just two months ago, have reached 234.

Health officials also announced 43 new coronavirus cases, including 30 in Merida, three in Umán, two each in Hocabá and Samahil and one case each in Acanceh, Chocholá, Hunucmá, Kanasín, Tecoh and Tixpéhual.

That brings to 1,976 confirmed cases in Yucatan, although the true number is widely believed to be much higher since testing rates are low.

Another 36 patients were declared recovered from the virus Wednesday. Doctors report 1,346 recovered patients in all, representing 72% of all infections.

A 49-year-old Izamal man was the youngest to perish and had no known previous conditions. An 86-year-old man from Mérida, who suffered from hypertension, was the oldest. The average age of the deceased was 66.

While 159 infected people remain quarantined at home, with mild symptoms and under monitoring by the Ministry of Health, 147 remain hospitalized in total isolation, two fewer than Tuesday.

The age range of the patients is from 4 months to 94 years.

In neighboring Quintana Roo, 29 deaths were reported in a single 24-hour period. All but nine were in Cancun, where hotels and resorts will reopen to tourists in five days.

The state of 1.5 million inhabitants added 54 patients to its COVID-19 caseload, while 19 recovered.
