Yucatecan-born soprano returns to her ‘Roots’

Claudia Rodríguez, soprano

Mérida, Yucatán — It is fitting that the recital “The Essence of My Roots” is returning to where soprano Claudia Rodríguez was born.

Her recital, “Esencia de Mi Tierra” in Spanish, was first performed here as part of the Mayan International Festival of Culture in 2013. Accompanying guitarist Cecilio Perera lives in Salzburg and works there as a teacher at the Mozarteum. And Rodríguez herself, who lives in Germany, has been touring with this recital in Europe, most recently in Dublin.

On stage, music and images explore the Peninsula’s Spanish conquest. The show is composed of 15 Mayan, Spanish and mestizo songs, each accompanied by an animated projection.

Rodríguez mixes concert-hall stylings with popular Mexican and Latin American folk music influences.

Her last hometown performance was in the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra’s production of the opera “The Marriage of Figaro” in 2015.

The recital is 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Teatro José Peón Contreras. Tickets can be reserved at boletos.capitaldelacultura.com.
