Merida, Yucatan — Noche Mexicana, the free and costume-y Saturday-night program that celebrates the nation’s music and dance, celebrates 22 years today.

The weekly show remains popular, especially among families with children and seniors.

Two mariachi groups will take the stage at the Remate de Paseo de Montejo as well as groups representing regions ranging from Veracruz to Nayarit. Reyna Adriana, a Noche Mexicana regular who belts out high-drama romantic ballads, will be on stage throughout.

The special guest of the night is the 14-member Sinaloense Corona Verde band, a Yucatecan group that specializes in music from Sinaloa.

The anniversary party will include the presentation of the Dancing Jaguars Folkloric Ballet and will conclude with a musical surprise with Mariachi Luna del Mayab.

The program will begin at 8 p.m. and will be extended an extra hour, ending after midnight.

The first “Mexican Night,” as it would be called in English, was held on Sept. 20, 1997. Since then, numerous local and national artists and ballets have shared their folklore and different musical genres on the stage. Chairs are arranged on the lawn, and food and crafts vendors set up every week.
