Mérida, Yucatán — For painting graffiti on five Centro Histórico facades, a suspect detained by municipal police was sent back to the scene of the crime 36 hours after his arrest.
And police watched as Christian Alejandro S.P. sprayed white paint over his markings, starting at Calle 52 from Calle 63 to 59.
Christian Alejandro was arrested Wednesday when police spotted him spraying red paint on Calle 52 between 63 and 61. Police then found evidence of his handiwork on four more buildings on the street, according to Diario de Yucatán.
When transferring the detainee to the Municipal Jail, police say they found a blunt and a bag of marijuana among his possessions.
Police say that it is now routine for them to supervise anyone caught applying graffiti or pasting decals in the historic center to be required to fix their damage within hours of their arrest.
Graffiti has been an ongoing problem in the historic center.
