Mérida, Yucatán — A group of watercolor painters will be painting together around the area for the next five days.
The artists will have breakfast together, go to their agreed-upon scenic spot, paint their scenes, have lunch and share critiques.
This event was started some 18 years ago in Bacalar by a guesthouse owner, Carolina Weiss, when a group of artists got together to capture the beauty of the lagoon there. Then they agreed to reunite the first week of each February.
And this year, they come to our region.
Monday will be spent at a hacienda and Tuesday at one of Mérida’s colorful cemeteries. Wednesday is a beach day, Thursday leads to a city mercado, and Friday concludes the journey at one of the city’s pretty parks.
Then, on Saturday, Feb. 11, their closing party and pop-up art gallery is open to the public. The party includes food and music by the Yucatones. The output of the week’s efforts, 50 paintings from about a dozen artists, will be exhibited and offered for sale.
The pop-up gallery will be at Calle 60 at 41 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
