Mérida, Yucatán —With 50 recent police academy cadets, the municipal police force is a growing presence in the Centro Histórico.
From Avenida Itzaes east to Nuestra Señora de Lourdes , and from Avenida Colón south to La Ermita, more police will oversee security and traffic, as well as aid tourists, says Diario de Yucatán.
Merida’s municipal police force, formed in 2003 after an absence of over 30 years, has 430 officers classified for traffic, surveillance, anti-riot and paramedic duty. They are backed by 30 patrol cars, 25 crowd-control vans, and 30 motorcycles and bicycles, with electric scooters to patrol tourist areas. They also have roadside assistance services and carry out an anti-drug education program (DARE) and a Safe School Program.
