Local broadcaster Telesur released photos showing fire damage following Tuesday’s blaze inside the historic Peón Contreras theater.
But the grainy images only appear to show damage at a section of the upper-level balcony near the sound engineer’s room where a short circuit apparently caused the fire. What’s visible in the rest of the auditorium seems to be intact.
Photos of the stage, where valuable musical instruments are stored, were not shared.
How the photos were obtained was also not disclosed.
Earlier today, police presence around the theater was minimal, as was the smell of smoke or visible smoke damage. A restaurant that’s part of the building had its lights on and was open for business.
The Teatro Peón Contreras was inaugurated in 1908 and is home to the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra.
