Yucatán Magazine recently spoke with Daniel Mickle, chairman of Democrats Abroad Yucatan (DAY), ahead of a holiday fundraiser that is in the works.

Tell us a bit about Democrats Abroad Yucatán.

DAY helps Americans vote legally in absentia from here in Yucatan. We’re based in Mérida but serve American voters across the Yucatán Peninsula. We have over 870 members.

Is voting from abroad difficult?

The process varies depending on the voter’s home state. It can be complicated, so we help you register to vote and cast your absentee ballot, all pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizen Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA).

The presidential election is coming next year.

Yes, indeed. 2024 will be a pivotal election in the USA, with Biden and Trump each seeking to define America’s political future. We want the vote of every American to be counted, and every voice heard.

So tell us about your upcoming holiday party and fundraiser.

On Sunday, Dec 3, we’ll have our biggest social event of the year: Cocktails, two bands and a three-course banquet with a variety of Mexican dishes at the fabulous El Remate restaurant in Santa Ana! It’s going to be a lot of fun! Proceeds from this celebration will be used for administrative expenses, educational events and voter outreach initiatives, all aimed at safeguarding our Democracy in the all-important 2024 election. We hope to see you there!
