Mérida, Yucatán — The Uptown Mérida shopping center in the Altabrisa area has signed a new tenant, and its name will be familiar to anyone from north of the border.

Minnesota-based electronics chain Best Buy is setting up its first-ever branch in Mérida. The store has been established in Mexico since 2008, but this is its first time in the Yucatecan capital. Best Buy also operates in the U.S. and Canada, surviving as a brick-and-mortar retailer while many of its competitors, such as Circuit City, have gone under.

Best Buy sells computers, cameras, stereo systems and all sorts of electronics to consumers.

Walmart and a Hilton Garden Inn will also be part of Uptown Mérida, and a 70-million-peso 10-room Cinemex and a Johnny Rockets restaurant are already open there. The mall has 32 stores.

Uptown Mérida is by the Monumento a las Haciendas traffic roundabout, south of Plaza Altabrisa and Star Medica hospital.
