Charity drag event sells out in record time at Hennessy’s

Drag is under attack in the United States, but Mérida is still a welcoming place for the art form. Already, clubs like Dix and Blue are all about lip-syncing queens. And now, Hennessy’s Irish Pub is hosting a Charity Drag Trivia Night — which sold out in an hour.

Hennessy’s, which has enjoyed enormous success since it opened more than 10 years ago, isn’t known for camp. Entertainment is typically very traditional rock, blues, jazz and more rock.

Owner Sean Hennessy promises to find a second date for Drag Trivia.

The event, which benefits Yucatán Kids, is hosted by a bearded drag queen named La Mont on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Tickets were 250 pesos. The charity is an international volunteer group that provides children with educational support and cultural enrichment at the Caimede shelter in Mérida.

Despite its apparent appeal to the Irish pub crowd, not everyone was a fan.

“Funny, I received some hateful rhetoric about this event from some obviously very right-wing gringos, and I just have one thing to say to them. This is Mexico, Hennessy’s is Mexican; save your hateful comments for the other side of the border. We are not interested in your uneducated, ill-informed opinion,” Hennessy wrote on social media.

“I will let you all know as soon as we have another date, and thanks to all for your continued support,” he said.
