Mérida, Yucatán — The citizen group Hoja Verde (Green Leaf) has worked five years to reforest the city’s parks. Their latest efforts took place over the weekend, when they took 20 donated royal palm, siricote, jícara and mango trees and planted them in Vista Alegre del Norte park near Plaza Altabrisa.

The group, formed by Jorge Escamilla Ávila and Alberto Villamil Canto, relies on volunteers and donations to create and expand green spaces in the city.

Escamilla Ávila told Diario de Yucatan  said the plants are donated by various groups, including Regálame tu Planta, which meets monthly at the Col. Alemán’s park, and Sociedad de Plantas de la República.

In the five years they have been doing this for several parks and reforested Merida. They have also donated 75 plants a palm real mall north of the city for parking; and even to the City.
