Yucatan remains at the orange epidemiological traffic light after hospitalizations rose by nearly a third in the past two weeks and positivity rates remained high.

However, overall hospitalizations, infections and deaths have remained stable, health authorities announced. Positive data has placed Yucatan in yellow on the federal traffic-light chart, but local authorities have rejected that, opting instead to continue with more strict safeguards.

Thursday’s briefing listed 45 new infections and four deaths in the previous 24 hours. That brings to 22,742 the number of COVIV-19 infections detected in Yucatan since March. The number of undetected cases is thought to be much higher. The recovery rate is around 85%.

Hospitals list 155 patients under treatment for the coronavirus, two more than the day before and 22 more than the week before.

New infections included 18 in Mérida, eight in Valladolid, five in Tizimín, four in Umán, and one in Abalá, Cacalchén, Cansahcab, Dzemul, Izamal, Muna, Panabá, Tekal de Venegas, Tekax and Ticul.

Deaths occurred in Acanceh, Abalá, Mérida and Umán. Two men and two women perished ranging in age from 56 to 73.

The “orange traffic light” is Mexico’s second-highest level of alert, affecting the degree to which businesses can operate. Thursday’s data included:

• Percentage of total intensive care occupancy with COVID and non-COVID patients: 19.9%, in green and rising
• Percentage of occupancy of total hospital beds with COVID and non-COVID patients: 45.1% in yellow and stable
• The increase in hospital admissions in relation to the previous week: 31.3%, red and on the rise
• The rate of contagiousness of the Coronavirus is in exponential growth: 1.08, yellow and stable
• The positivity of the cases is 47.6%, in red and on the decline

Yucatan appears stalled while its neighboring state Quintana Roo is under yellow alert and Campeche, on the other side, is in green. Across Mexico, 18 states are at orange and 12 have advanced to yellow, which loosens restrictions on schools, businesses and activities.

In two weeks, health authorities will reevaluate whether Yucatan deserves to progress to the yellow light.
