Hoctun Yucatan — Agricultural workers blocked the Merida-Cancun highway for an hour Thursday morning in an annual general protest.

The demonstrators, members of the Authentic Front of the Field (Frente Auténtico del Campo), frustrated drivers, whose cars and trucks were backed up for miles.

Others from the same organization protested in Mexico City outside the Senate, and on highways in all 32 states.

Activist Claudia Caltempa led the Yucatan blockade accompanied by about 50 protesters. The protest coincided with others around Mexico, seeking more dialog with the government and support for their industry.

Farm workers mobilize every Aug. 8 to remember the birth of revolutionary hero Emiliano Zapata.
