The number of cases of influenza grew significantly last week in the Yucatan, federal health authorities confirmed.
According to reports from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave), there are already 78 confirmed flu cases so far this season, an amount that increased significantly in just one week.
Based on the information provided by the federal health authorities last week, 63 positive cases were reported. That compares to 15 so far this week.
At least five people have lost their lives due to flu complications so far this season, which began in October and concludes May 20.
Despite this, Yucatán remains one of the states with the lowest incidence of influenza cases in Mexico.
At the national level, 6,925 positive cases have been confirmed with 780 deaths due to complications.
The states with the highest number of confirmed cases of influenza during the season are Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Guanajuato; that altogether they add 35.8 percent of all confirmed cases.
The states with the highest number of deaths from influenza are the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Mexico City, Puebla and Guanajuato, which together account for 45 percent of deaths.
Health authorities recommend preventive measures such as frequent hand washing. Covering a sneeze should be done with the elbow, not hand.
